Madrid, 15th September 2025. The Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Nanoscience (IMDEA Nanociencia) has signed the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, with the signature of Prof. Rodolfo Miranda, director of the institution, on 8 September 2025. IMDEA Nanociencia thus joins more than 820 universities, institutes and research centres around the world that have already signed this declaration since 2003, which advocates open access to the results of research work.
The Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities was adopted on 22 October 2003, on the initiative of the Max Planck Society, and has since become one of the milestones of the open access movement. The letter highlights the need to disseminate knowledge quickly and widely and to guarantee everyone barrier-free access to all contributions through repositories. The Declaration is considered a benchmark of commitment ‘to promote the Internet as a functional tool that serves as a global basis for scientific knowledge and human reflection, and to specify measures that should be taken into account by those responsible for research policies and scientific institutions’.
By signing the Berlin Declaration, IMDEA Nanociencia confirms and reinforces its commitment to the principles of Open Science, which it was already fulfilling through initiatives such as the implementation of the Institutional Repository, which preserves and disseminates the centre's scientific output and already has 98% of files with open access rights.
